Columbia Things to Do: 91 reviews and 125 photos

The South Carolina State Capitol building is referred to as The State House and is located in the heart of downtown Columbia at Main and Gervais Streets. Construction began in 1855 and it was not yet completed when General Sherman attacked the city in 1865. The building survived, but was hit and these scars are marked with bronze stars on the west and south walls of the building. The large granite corinthian columns are beautiful and the dome is certainly imposing, if not overly attractive. The well-manicured grounds are full of monuments and statues honoring important state heroes and symbols. The State House is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm; Saturday 10am to 5pm.
