  Theatre and Temple
by cheryl_mcleod21

Built in 6th century BC and located on Paronos Mountain, the Delphi Oracle originated because of a gap in a rock spewing vapours that, when inhaled, caused people to hallucinate. These vapours turned out to just be sulphur vapours. Because of this they built an oracle to which people traveled long distances to get messages from God from an elected middle-aged prophetess who would sit and drink holy water and chew on loral leaves. Loral leaves because this oracle was dedicated to Apollo and loral was the plant of Apollo.
Also at the site are the 3 things that always accompanied an oracle, a temple for the soul, a theatre for the mind and a stadium for the body. The theatre and stadium are still in fairly good condition and are absolutely worth the hike up the mountain to see. The theatre was built to sit 5,000 people. The stadium sat 6,000 and played host to the Delphi International Games, which were held every 3 years. The temple is mostly in ruins but many of the gifts which people brought when they came to worship, such as statues and buildings, are not.
Another amazing site is the wall which is not held together by mortar or anything else, instead the rocks were shaped to fit together perfectly there is still a large section standing today.
