"Explore the Undiscovered Part of Germany" Germany Things to Do Tip by DanielF
Germany Things to Do: 1,233 reviews and 1,985 photos
The Federal State of Lower Saxony is the second largest in Germany and has a population of eight millions. The landscape is here mostly flat and this Bundesland includes most of the German North Sea Coast, including the famous Eastern Frisian Islands and the unique Wadden Sea.
Although the name Lower Saxony has been traditionally used, it is only after the Bonn's Fundamental Law that this territory has been politically united. This new entity was born by merging former kingdoms, duchies and principalities: the Kingdom of Hannover, the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, the Duchy of Brunswick and the Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe.
The State capital, Hannover, may not be the most exciting city in Germany, but is pleasant and efficiently organised. It is indeed a good presentation card for a State which is full of historical cities and towns without all the tourists who flood the most famous sites in Southern Germany.
Visit my Lower Saxony page for more tips and pictures.
Directions: At the feet of the Middle German Range, where the lowlands of North Germany begin, reaching for the North Sea coast.
