"If You Like Archaeology...." Iquique Things to Do Tip by wrjones

Iquique Things to Do: 11 reviews and 26 photos

In the surrounding desert, there are many things of interest that should not be missed. El Gigante de Atacama is one of the most touted geoglyphs that you should see. It is located east of Huara in the middle of nothing. This desert area is totally devoid of anything living except for road crews, a few tourists and the occasional bus going down a dusty dirt road to.......
El Gigante is a human figure over 80 meters tall. It's constructed on the side of a low hill by outlining the figure in stone and removing many of the rocks within the depiction. There are a few other far less interesting geoglyphs on a neighboring hill. This is really interesting to see.
This is not commercialized like you might expect. There is nothing there except for the 'glyphs. No admission fee. You can walk right up to it, but the view is better further back.
In November, the weather was great but I suspect in summer the heat would be very nasty. Bring water. You won't find any out there.
You can get there with a tour, taxi or rented vehicle. When we were there, the road was being worked on and there were many detours. I am not sure we could have found El Gigante had we been on our own.

Directions: East of Huara on road to Chusmiza/Bolivia
