Common dolphins in the Bay of Islands.
by worldkiwi

Dolphin and whale watching is just one way you can get up close and spiritual with nature in New Zealand.
This picture is from a dolphin watching trip I did in January 2004 in the Bay of Islands. See that place's page for more information.
Other places where you can go whale/dolphin watching include Kaikoura in South Island and even the Hauraki Gulf, near Auckland. Of course, if you are lucky enough to be able to spend time on a yacht or launch, you will be very likely to see some marine animals.
In our national parks and reserves you can see our unique birdlife and if you're in Dunedin, make sure you go out to the Otago peninsula to see rare penguins and albatross.
