Turku, or Åbo in Swedish, is situated in the southwest of Finland. The city was founded in 1157 by the Swedish king Eric IX. It had been capital of Finland until 1812, when the government moved to Helsinki. Turku experienced a huge fire in 1827 which destroyed most parts of town. The city is well known because of its university.
When we arrived Turku it stopped raining. It was Saturday evening and we enjoyed the dry weather walking along the Aurajoki River. So I can't tell you a lot of the local architectural highlights.
