Basel Things to Do: 203 reviews and 337 photos
The Basel Museum of ANCIENT ART is the only Swiss museum devoted exclusively to the ancient civilizations of the MEDITERRANEAN AREA.
It opened in 1966 and is installed in two classicistic townhouses in the city centre.
Some pieces that for a long time have been in possession of the canton of Basel-Stadt have found a new home here in this Museum.
The majority of the exhibits however, are gifts from private collectors!
In 2001 a new underground gallery with Egyptian Art was inaugurated.
The permanent exhibition shows ancient art mainly from the Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman cultures, but there are also some objects from the Ancient Near East and Cyprus.
The exhibits range chronologically from the 4th Millennium B.C. to the 7th Century A.D..
Highlights of the Basel collection are outstanding marble sculptures and ceramics, but bronzes, clay figurerines, jewellery and generally crafts are represented by splendid examples too.
This is a place for COINNOISSEURS.....
