If you are driving around Alaska, and would like to see coastal communities as well, a good route to chose would be to drive to Portage and take the Alaska Railroad to Whittier. Once there catch the Alaska Marine Highway System to Valdez.

Once in Valdez (beautiful, I lived there as a child for a year) you can explore the territory around there, including Kennicott as you drive up to Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway. Make sure to see Chena Hot Springs while in Fairbanks.

The return to Anchorage on the Parks Highway will bring you past Denali National Park I?d stop in Talkeetna and take a flight-seeing trip over Denali if you have the opportunity.

That would be one of the ideal routes to see a lot of Alaska with very little back-tracking.
