Guess why it's called this? Hmmm....
It's because it's sandy! Isn't that clever? Sitka has some beach areas, but this is the only one with any sort of fine sand on it. And it's not a long stretch of fine sand, either--it looks a bit like someone once had a sandbox and dumped the sand here. However, it's "the place" to go swimming in Sitka and believe me, people do. I never have because I'm used to water that gets above the upper 40 degree (F) range. There were a few days this past summer that got into the 80s and Sandy Beach was packed. The newspaper had a picture of people swimming for the front page story (there aren't too many newsworthy events in Sitka) It's a nice hangout, though--great view (of course...everywhere in Sitka has a great view) and a good place to relax and get some sun if it's that kind of day.
Address: Halibut Point Road
Directions: Take HPR out of town, past the SeaMart and you'll see Sandy Beach on the left. If you're coming from the ferry terminal, it's on the right.
