Favorite thing: I found history of Slovaks, people with strong cultural heritage and no independent state (except 1939-1945) till 1993 very, very interesting.
Notice that the area of present-day Slovakia was a part of Czech, Hungary, Austro-Hungary and Hapsburg Empire in the past. You can easy find a lot of Czech, Hungarian and Austrian influences seen especially both in architecture and in local cuisine. More to north and east these influences are weaker.
270,000 B.C. - the oldest surviving archeological artefacts,
6th c. - Roman legions arrived to South-West Slovakia,
833 - united Slav State (called later Great Moravia) was est. by prince Mojmir, then Christianization of the Slavs,
9-11c. integration of the territory of present-day Slovakia as multinational Hungarian State (although Hungarian ethnic group was minority),
1526 - the Battle of Mohacs won by Ottoman Empire, Slovakia became part of Hapsburg Monarchy and area of numerous wars against Ottoman Empire,
1918 - 1939 - Republic of Czechoslovakia,
1939 - 1945 the first independent Slovak Republic was established (Germany's ally during WWII),
1945 - 1989 Czechoslovakia under communist regime,
