Elephant in Uda Walawe National Park
by jennifermueller

Our Uda Walawe visit was expensive on a Sri Lankan scale but on the top of our list of favorite things. The wildlife was fantastic and the guide excellent. We saw elephants young and old, a blackfooted cat, water buffalo, hawks, owls, peacocks, and dozens of other birds. The landscape was spectacular.

Photography from the back of a bumpy jeep that vibrates even when just idling is challenging.

Many posters complain that forigners are charged more than locals for entry to the sites in Sri Lanka. Uda Walawe is one of the places where you'll feel that pinch. But keep in mind that western influences and the demand for cash crops and cattle land are sqeezing wildlife all over the world and that this is a third world county faced presearving unique cultural and natural heratige sites. We were charged Rs. 5752 for entry for three of us and a jeep.

Address: near Embilipitiya, straight south of Nuwara Eliya
