The doorway that my young nephew is standing makes adults stoop. The state park literature explains reasons for this were to conserve heat and make it hard for enemies to enter. The doorway would make it hard for enemies to overtake. As for conserving heat... these buildings were heated by wood fires in the middle of rainforests, lack of heat source wasn't a concern. I have sat and watched carvers at work, and knowing it takes a long, long time to create these buildings. I would think that a carver would stop working on a doorway when it was large enough. That is my opinion, I'm not a historian.
