[January 2005] From what I understand, the train service from Oslo to Stockholm has been considerably limited. Due to the rise in low-cost air carriers, there has been a significant reduction in the number of rail passengers. As a result, direct train service between the capitals of Norway and Sweden is now limited to weekends - with the possibility that service may be extended to weekdays during the peak summer months. Interesting development.
When I was in Scandinavia in the December 2003, I took the train from Stockholm to Oslo. It took about five hours to cover 260 miles, or 420 kilometers - so it wasn't quite a bullet train! The scenery was not spectacular - especially when contrasted with the route to Bergen - but still, there were some pleasant vistas of lakes and woods. I am somewhat unclear as to why the Scandinavian countries decided to curtail service on this international route. It puzzles me that they would seem to be taking measures that lead them down the path undertaken by the United States and Britain in weakening their rail infrastructures. But obviously the governments involved decided that there were other more important uses for their limited financial resources.
