After the death of the big Duke of Bourgogne Philippe le Bont, his son Charles raised to become the Duke of Franche Comte, and had the idea to make a union with Bourgogne,
Charles, successed to liberate Besancon from the Swiss occupation, and he become the national hero of the city, and the big Duke of it!
A couple of years later a remarkable period of Discoveries and progress started in Besancon: Invetation, Industry, Railways, Metallurgy, etc...
Today Besancon is an important city in France, thus how it was chosen to be the capital of Franche comte!
but the dream of Charles was broken as Bourgogne is now separated from Franche Comte!
