  Rubenshuis from the garden, Antwerp
by Paul2001

As the name suggests this the home of the magnificent Flemish painter, Peter Paul Rubens. As Rubens is one of my personal favourite painters of all time, I had to pay a visit. Unfortunately there are only a couple of actual paintings by Rubens here but there are copies of his works in addition to works that he collected by other artists.
Rubens was a smart fellow and, unlike Rembrandt, invested his money wisely. He enmassed a fortune and in 1610 built this marvelous mansion. Rubens lived and worked here until he died in 1640. The mansion has been superby restored and gives you an excellent idea of how the wealthy might have lived during Rubens time. Be sure to take a stroll through the gardens in the rear of the mansion as they are lovely. Those very familiar with the works of Rubens will recognize the garden as he often painted portraits of his family in this setting.
Rubenhuis is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-4:45pm. Admission is 5 Euros.

Address: Wapper 9-11
Directions: To the east of the city centre from which you can easily walk. There are also numerous trams that take you there.
