Beautiful Palace at Falkland has really wonderful gardens and it also has the oldest tennis courts in Britain. Falkland Palace is a Renaissance building, it was designed as a hunting lodge for the Stuart Kings. The construction was started by James IV in 1500 but most of the work was carried out by his son James V in the 1530's. He had French wives and under their influence he employed French workman to redecorate the facade of the East Range with dormers, buttresses and medallions and to build the South Range. The castle was also briefly occupied by Rob Roy in 1715.
The gardens are beautifully laid out and the tennis court was built in 1539 for James V.
