The Great Bell which was the town Bellfry as far back as the 15th century when it stood between the parish church of St. Ely and now the Town Hall, has rung out the passage of time for the people of Bordeaux for many years. The clock dates from 1759, by astronomer- Larroqque, was replaced the one dating from 1567 by Ramond Sudre. It stands 133 ft high, consists of two interconnected round towers dominated by the golden leopard at the top. It replaced the old St. Ely Gate that opened onto the 13th century ramparts and was used by pilgrims on their way
to Santiago de Compostella.
