There are about 10,000 couples living at this colony, though it is important to come at the right time of year to see them. The penguins arrive around September but first mate and lay eggs. Te best time to see them is in December and January. In February they start to leave as they spend 6 months away, mainly along the coast of Brazil, the Galapagos, and the Falkland Islands.

The colony is about 1.5 hours from Puta Arenas, partly on a paved road and the rest on a dirt road. O the way be on the lookout for the South American Ostrich, known as Nyandu or Lesser Rhea.

Once at the colony, there is an entrance fee of about 4 US$, and a walk of about 1 mile to the beach where the greatest concentration of penguins is located. The penguins are aptly named "Magellanic Penguins", after the great explorer who discovered the Strait of Magellan in 1519.
