Most Portuguese highways require a toll. Beware that there are special lanes for holders of a device that makes direct debit to bank account - those lanes are signalled with a green V (Via Verde). If you are driving a car without the Via Verde device, you should go to the other lanes. In those lanes you can pay either by cash or debit card. Some highways or bridges have a fixed toll so you just need to drive to the correct lane and pay. Some other have a variable toll and you must collect a ticket when you "enter" and then deliver that ticket when you leave.
