  Saigo Takamori
by ChuckG

At one of the entrance of Ueno Park, by the Shinobazu pond, go see the small statue of Saigo Takamori. He was the leader of the Meiji forces who instigated a Satsuma rebellion against the emperor in 1877. But he failed and killed himself. He was pardoned by the emperor and this statue was erected in 1899.
