  Ahu Tongariki
by wadekorzan

This is a really magical sight----15 Moai all together and standing. Though the actual statues were re-erected, the site is amazing as it is the site of the largest "Ahu" ever built.

There are many different "Ahu's", built at different times for different reasons, but generally the most important are the "ahu moai", the platforms built of stone on which the giant statues stand. Many of the "Ahu" sites were also burial grounds, and while on the island you will be asked not to walk on the Ahus themsleves.

The statues at Tongariki were thrown from their ahu by a tidal wave which resulted from a earthquake which took place between the island and the coast of Chile in 1960.

Directions: Located on the southeast side of the island. The island is small so when you are there with your map, you won't have a problem to find the location.
