Kumbalgarh Fort is amongst the most amazing fortifications that I visited in all of India and this is a country that does not have a shortage of great fortifications. Built by Maharana Kumbha in the 15th century, this fort is probably one of the largest in India.
The fort consist of a palace, which a guide will escort you through, several interesting temples of both Hindu and Jain origin and massive walls that stretch on forever. The walls meander on for some 36km and are incredibly thick. The fortress was never taken by direct assault. In fact the only time Kumbalgarh fell was when Akbar the Great poisoned the well. The walls are so long that it takes two or more days to walk around them. For me one of the frustrating things about my visit is that I was immediately entranced by the place. I wanted to wander all day amongst the countryside within the walls and visit the abundance of wildlife and temples that were scattered about. Sadly I only had about three hours time for a visit. If you have the time I would recommend that you stay a very nice hotel that is located just by the main gate to the fortress of Kumbalgarh and take your time in touring this great destination. Supposedly you can actually hike through the interesting countryside to Ranakpur.

Directions: 84km north of Udaipur
