This a really beautiful example of a noblemans house. In the beginning og the 16th century a lot of these houses where build in prosperous Mechelen.
Hiëronymus van Busleyden (ca 1470-1517) was one of the most important humanist of his time and gave instruction to build this house to shelter his huge art collection.
Hieronymus died when the building wasn't even finished. His art collecton got sold and a huge fire in 1914 left nothing of the building.
From 1930 till 1938 'het hof van Busleyden' got restored and king Leopold III opened it as the new city museum.
Inside one can see a not so interesting collection , but it is free. The most important pieces are the gold leather - once Mechelen was famous for this craft. Another thing typical for Mechelen was the furniture. Still popular the 'Mechelse kast' - cabinet or table. Quit heavy pieces with loads of decorations.
