Church of St Demetrius of Salonica - built during the years 1671 to 1673 - is an important monument of Yaroslavl, because nothing like this - for several details - was built during the XVII century - a golden time for Yaroslavlıs religious architecture. The church underwent several alterations in time, for example when the chapel with gallery was added in 1700. Originally it was a church of five domes - like so many in Russia, but the lateral domes were brought down at the turn of the XIX century, leaving it with a single one. As a ıcompensationı a porch was built at its west side. During the 1918 - 1922 Civil War the central dome and tent-roof of the belfry were destroyed. Massive restoration works were needed to repair the church.

In 1686 church of St Demetrius of Salonica was decorated by frescoes painted by a group of Yaroslavl masters: Sebastjan Dmitrijev headed them (including several of his own pupils).
