  5 a-side football

Unsurprisingly in a desert country where temperatures hit 50 degrees, the idea of sporting activity isn't as popular here as in other countries! There are Sudanese runners, and I myself used to go for a run round the neighbourhood every now and again, particularly in winter, but to most Sudanese that would be enough to convince them that you're clinically insane.

In a country where 'taking rest' is the national pastime, even walking a few streets will bring you puzzled looks and comments about crazy khawajas!

But there are a few places to go if you want - apart from one or two running and swimming clubs, there's also a squash club, tennis courts and occasional 5-aside football around the expat area of Amarat.

The only real popular sport in Sudan is football. There's a national league which draws relatively large crowds - particularly in Khartoum and Omdurman. It's definitely worth going to a match although finding out when and where it is can be a difficult task. Even committed fans never seem to know when the next game is.

For those with ESPN or BBC then British football is very popular. For those without it, I used to spend an occasional Saturday afternoon sitting on the pavement on Sharia Al Baladiya with a regular crowd glued to the TVs in the electronics shop window! There was quite a good atmosphere! Though fortunately there's not the millions of Man Utd shirts that have invaded every other city on the planet... yet!
