Bairro Alto means "high neighborhood" because it stands on top of one of the city's highest hills. It is the city's bohemian quarter, the center of its vibrant nightlife (see my nightlife tip), but during the day it is a quiet residential neighborhood.
It is a fun place to visit starting in late afternoon when most of the alternative shops, trendy bars, and traditional restaurants begin to open.

Address: Lisbon, Portugal, 1200-109
Directions: Get off at the Baixa-Chiado stop in the metro, taking the "Largo do Chiado" exit at the station, and walk to this pedestrians-only quarter.
