On the 3rd day of the Inca Trail you will reach the ruins at Winay Wayna. In some ways, I enjoyed these more than (dare I say it?) Machu Picchu. These ruins were less crowded and I also loved the way they were slightly overgrown with wildflowers. As you can see in the photo, the vegetation appears like flower boxes in the windows. There was also a great view from these ruins down to a waterfall, river and valley below.

Directions: If you are not walking the Inca Trail, you can also reach the ruins from Machu Picchu. Just head up to the Sun Gate and keep going. You can easily walk there and back in the same day, and still have time to explore both the ruins.
