The US Open occurs at the USTA National Tennis Center each summer, one of the four venues for Grand Slam Tennis. Popularly called Flushing Meadows in association with its geographic location, the tennis event carries the richest purse in professional sports, with over $16 million in prize money awarded in 2003. The tennis stadium and subsidiary courts are a short walk from Shea Stadium and will forever be associated with the famous champions from New York, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors.
