Socialist HQ turned into a cultural centre
by Norali

Vooruit is the place to catch a theatre play, international dance performances, exhibitions, parties.

The Vooruit used to be the socialist HQ in Ghent. It is now turned into a cultural centre that hosts shows, theater plays, exhibitions.

I only saw it from outside so I don't remember that much of the interior and I hadn't taken the program. For sure, this is one of unusual buildings in the area.

"The Vooruit differs from other cultural centres in Belgium by it's unique early 20th century building, that was erected in the spirit of the big socialist labour movement." excerpt from the use-it website.

BTW, Ghent is the only Belgian city to be covered by use-it... so that may be interesting to know.

For it being located in the University area, I expect it to be more boheme than posh. Dannie told me that it is a kind of place to hang out for students and 20ers. Also, I heard from a Gentenaar, that the caf? used to be a gathering spot for light lunch (sandwich, soup, pies, lasagna). Client?le is rather made up by local intellectuals.
