Westerkerk - Westertoren, Amsterdam: 48 reviews and 87 photos
It was the same H. de Keyser that started building the Westerkerk, (Western church). He started work in 1620, but is son was eventually the one that finished the job. The church has striking resamblings to the Souther church (Zuiderkerk), but somewhat bigger and somewhat more beautiful. On Pinksteren (Whitsunday) 1631 it was opened as being the largest protestant church in the world! The church however was mostly ment for the more wealthy citizens of the ?Jordaan?. The tower (only finished in 1638) towers high above this neighbourhood and has been sung about in the typical style that originates from here. The carrillion (clocks) of the Westertower were also described in Anne Frank's diary, as the only sounds she daily heart from the outside world.
