Chenery Park: "Down home food, uptown flair" Chenery Park Restaurant Tip by mrtourne

Chenery Park gets quite a few things right, which leads to it being busy pretty much every night of the week. This hidden gem of a neighbourhood restaurant (tucked away in Glen Park, within walking distance of the Glen Park BART station) serves excellent, unpretentious food.

We went there for my partner's birthday this last Thanksgiving weekend. The ambience is very soothing - the walls are painted in a pale green color, while subdued lighting sets you at ease. The space is very well utilized as well, in multiple levels which can be seen from every corner of the restaurant, which lends to its feeling of comfort. The dining room is not too noisy and you can carry a conversation without raising your voice...

As for the food, everything was excellent. Their homemade clam chowder (with clams presented on the open shells, and fresh bacon) strikes a good balance of homey and sophisticated. The mussels were (I hear) excelent, served with some very tasty parmesan crisps. The New York steak with fries was very tender and cooked at the right medium rare point I requested, the herbed butter on top made it all the more delicious.

The dessert - a warm chocolate cake topped with fresh chantilly cream - was also delicious, even though it did not have the gooey center I was hoping for... still didn't leave a bite on the plate

The young-ish staff is very attentive, parking wasn't very complicated at all (and BART, 2 blocks away, is an excellent option to get there), and the area is very, very charming.

The wine list is affordable, with decent markups, running around 80-100% of grocery store prices (where many other restaurants run around 200%) - we had a bottle of Veuve Cliquot for about $60 ($28 in stores) but there were plenty of wine options in the mid 30s as well.

All in all, a great experience

Favorite Dish: The New York steak was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside - just about right
