"The Power of Mother nature" Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park Off The Beaten Path Tip by herzog63

  Big Root Wad
by herzog63

You will find some huge Sitka Spruce trees that are blown over from some of the powerful storms that we have here. A couple of years ago we had a recorded wind gust of 116 MPH. The Sitka Spruce have a very shallow root system so in wet areas they can be very unstable. They don't snap off (although they can) usually the whole tree including the root wad will blow over. Beware of camping under the wrong tree during a big windstorm!
