The Piarists were a prominent monastic brotherhood who in the 18th century were given a large tract of land outside the city wall during the reign of Emperor Josef I (1705-1711). The monastic church was designed by Baroque master Hildebrandt, and completed in 1753. Although now the Piaristenkirche is the midst of Vienna's urban bustle, it still feels very much the center of its own pietistic world.
