"Rising majestically above everything around it, the Karlskirche is, without doubt, the city's finest Baroque Church." So sez "The Rough Guide to Vienna," and I think few visitors to the city - and architectural cognoscenti - would disagree. This is another piece with the architectural imprint of Vienna's princes of 18th century design, Johann Fischer von Erlach senior and Johann Fischer von Erlach junior. It was conceived and designed as a memorial to those who died in the terrible Plague of 1713; it is appropriately dedicated to one of the Catholic Church's great service saints, St. Carlo Borromeo, who ministered to the sick and the dying in 16th century Milan. The towering pillars depict scenes from Borromeo's heroic life. But it's the dome which is the true piece de resistance here. It's a thing of glory, one of the signature features of the Viennese skyline, and beautifully illuminated at night.
