The Cathedral or Duomo was built in front of the old baptisery from 4th or 5th century. The interior inspired Dante?s inferno (Hell). Florentine Artists competed to execute the baptistery?s famous bronze doors. Ghiberti completed his works in 1425 (after Brunelleschi left his project), and short after he received the commission to complete the last set of doors, the works took him more than 28 years. Specially famous are the "Gates of Paradise".
The construction of this cathedral began in 1296. In 1334 Giotto continued the works, and a few years later Francesco Talenti and Lapo Ghini finished the cathedral. In 1436 Filippo Brunelleschi added the famous dome.
The original facade was demolished in 1587 . The facade you are looking at is a work of 1887.
The frescoes on this dome are a work of Vasari and Federico Zuccaro (16th century). Filippo Brunelleschi designed dome. Interior is not so richly decorated as I expected, only few paintings on the walls and great dome.
