After the city's worst recorded flooding in 1908 when more than 10 inches of rain caused the Trinity River to spill its banks, planning for the bridge began. The bridge was modelled after the Kansas City bridge and built strong enough to withstand the often rushing currents of the Trinity. Earlier bridges of wood and still had not withstood such flooding.
