Cesar Manrique was born in 1919 and died in 1992.He was born in Arrecife and made Lanzarote famous. He was a genuis and that made him famous in the world of modern art.He left Lanzarote quite young to further his career and went to New York,Paris and Madrid. He became a wonderful modern artist. On his return to Lanzarote in 1968 he was surprised to see tourism taking hold.He wanted to make sure it was kept tasteful and in keeping with the culture and tradition of Lanzarote.
He was granted permission to do what he liked to keep Lanzarote unspoilt. He made rules ,architect rules for buildings,no billboards allowed on sides of roads,no buildings over 2 stories(only on tourist resorts were theses allowed). He made beautiful wind driven giant mobile sculptures all over Lanzarote.
Window shutters could only be painted in green or plain wood or blue also on coasts.
He sadly died in 1992 in a car crash outside his house. We was buried at Haria. He won awards for conservation and people consider him a saint.
This is why Lanzarote is so unspoilt and beautiful.Still no high rise buildings and deveopement kept to a miminum and kept tasteful. Thanks Ceasr, Lanzarote is beautiful and unspoilt. Not many tourist spots like that around now.

Address: All over Lanzarote you can see his influence
