This massive (and therefore technically heavy) structure in the middle of town was constructed roughly 200 years after opera came to Paris. Built from designs by Garnier after a fierce competition, the elegant results are impressive, but despite all this space the theater has limited seating, and thus tickets are not easy to come by. While the outside steps are the lounging grounds for the city's youth, the entrance foyer can be seen on occasion to dazzle the drop-in with its fabulous chandeliers and sumptuous hallways. Otherwise, your only carte de passage is a handful of francs.
