On walking through the Drepung monastery, I came across a couple of rooms barred of murals and statues. In fact, they were being washed out /peeled off by the Cultural guards/Red army during the revolution. It has been told that nearly 40 per cent of the monastery was demolished and hundreds of monks were massacred. As I could read Chinese, the writings on the walls meant to put in to priority the welfare of the state. To provide and serve the motherland...(or at least it went on the line of these....)
