We began our 2002 trip in Monpazier, driving there directly from the Bordeaux airport (well, we did make a few stops along the way. . .the scenery compells you to slow down and take it in).

Monpazier is considered one of the best examples of a bastide (fortified village) in the entire south-west of France.

The central Place des Cornières is surrounded by medieval and seventeenth-century houses. This is a little gem of a place to visit ~ very undiscovered and very quaint. We felt we couldn't have picked a better spot from which to start our explorations.
