It's interesting to see in Bali that villages specialise in different crafts. Mas village is famous for wood carving, so almost the whole village is one large craft shop.

Woodcarving is a skill given by the Gods to the people of the village and transmitted from generation to generation. Originally the woodcarvers were all Brahmins who worked only on ritual or courtly projects. During the centuries, different syles of woodcarving have developed. The tourist boom started mostly in the 1970's.

What to buy: All kinds of objects are made: masks, sculptures, bowls, etc. Different kinds of wood such as ebony and sandalwood are used for carving (but be careful, cheap products are not made from precious wood: the desired dark colour is often the result of the careful application of black shoe shine - you can smell it).

What to pay: All kinds of prices - bargaining is a must

Address: Mas village, mostly along the main road
Directions: Between Denpasar and Ubud
Theme: Local Craft
