"Homestake Mine" Lead Things to Do Tip by BLSM
Lead Things to Do: 1 reviews and 1 photos
The Homestake mine was at one time one of the largest producer of gold ore. It was once the largest gold mine in the Western Hemisphere. It operated from about 1876 until December 2001. The surface mining was stopped in 1998 and underground mining was shut down in 2001 because the cost of extracing the gold was becoming too expensive. The visitors center is still open and you can see the open cut mine from there.
Talks are under way to try to convert the underground part in to a possible deep underground physics laboratory.
