If you are trekking independantly and really become stuck, perhaps finding your pack too heavy and there are apparently no porters or guides around to help, wave down one of the frequent yak or dzopeo trains as it passes and if there is room they may well help you to the next village. It should only cost about Rs50 or so for an hour or two and may prove a godsend.
