In the old city centre we visited the Grand Mosque. This mosque is built at the end of the 13th century. Varied French architectural styles are integrated in this mosque, like the converted former Cathedral of St Mary from the 12th century. So the bell tower is harmoniously rebuilt into a minaret.
Parts of the baptistery have been re-used in the adjacent Al Qartawiya Madrassah.
Within the complex of the mosque are two other Madrassahs, al- Shamsiyat and al-Macilhad, both from the 14th century.
The Grand Mosque can be visited by non-muslims. here women have to bring their own scarf for covering their heads.
