In the old city are several Khans or caravanserais or warehouses, where merchants brought their goods for sale and storage. Khans were used by guilds or groups of people. So, the fourteenth century Khan Al-misriyyin was used by the Egyptian traders and the Khan Al-Aksar served the soldiers in the same period. The Khan es-Saboun was originally an Ottoman barrack, but converted in a warehouse for soap till today.
We visited the Khan el-Khayyatin with workshops and storage areas of taylors. The restoration work in this Khan has brought to light various Byzantine remains, including an intact column and capital. We enjoyed the authentic and medieval atmosphere of the Khans and this part of the Old City, where were not many tourists around.
