"El Torre - The Tower" Ek Balam Things to Do Tip by shdw100

The largest of the structures at Ek Balam is El Torre. This tower is the result of many generations of construction, literally layer upon layer. Every 52 years, the Mayans thought that the world would be destroyed, so they destroyed their temples in preparation for this day. When it didn't happen, they then commenced rebuilding on the existing structure, hence the layered look.
Archaeologists have excavated part of the temple in order to reveal the underlying levels of construction. That has left the façade un-intact, so to speak.
The tomb of the ruler of Ek Balam was found underneath the outermost layer of wall. The opening of the tomb has exquisite stucco work! This tomb opening is discussed in another Must see tip

Directions: Ek Balam is open seven days a week between 8 am and 5 pm. The entrance fee is about 2 usd. There are very basic restrooms at the entrance and a parking lot just outside. You will need about an hour to see the site at a nice slow pace.
