  Ermita de la Paz
by micas_pt

Ermita de la Paz ( Peace Chapel ) was built in the 18th century on top of the ruins of a 16th century renaissance chapel. Inside the chapel there is a beautiful dome and a Barroc style altarpiece.

The Ermita de la Paz has it's origins in 1720 when the Hermandad de Ntra. Sra. de la Paz ( Lady of Peace's Brotherhood ) was founded and its ordinances approved. By then, the brethen went to the Ayuntamiento ( City Hall ) and complained that they couldn't celebrate the mass in Plaza Mayor, so they asked to use the Ermita de San Benedito ( San Benedito chapel ), in ruins by then. The ruins were rebuilt and in 1756 an image ordered by the Hermandad was placed in the altar. This chapel has been known, since then, by the name of Ntra. Sra. de la Paz ( Our Lady of Peace ). In former days, the procession to publish the bula left from this chapel and went to Iglesia de Santa Maria.
