The Subway system in New York is really fantastic! I heard it has improved a lot, but when we were there it was really splendid. They are very punctual, plenty, informative, ...
An example: we went on the train to the South of Manhattan, and had to get off at (I think) Columbus Circle. Before we got off, the speaker inside the metro told us that we could get off at the next station and immediately take the train on the same platform going downtown :-)
It might get expensive to buy one way tickets all the time (being 2 US$ per go). By far the best solution (if you're staying for a week), is to buy a seven-day card for unlimited rides; they can be bought in most subway stations and subway booths and cost 21US$. You can even go on the bus with them.
Also, the metro is just one of NY's main attractions. I loved it!
