  Rock chasm overlooked by oaks
by jayhawk2000

Catherine Hauber, author of the Hiking Guide to Kansas, praises the trails around Elk City Lake as among her favourites in the state.

'Outside' magazine named the 15-mile Elk River Hiking Trail as the best in Kansas. It's a strenuous trek along the north shore with bizarre rock formations, tremendous (for Kansas) waterside cliffs and thick oak groves filled with wildlife. I remember my first attempt at a long distance hike was here on a high school biology class field trip and we only made it halfway. Maybe it also didn't help my biology teacher was menopausal at the time? If you want a quick taste of what the trail has to offer, at least hike the first mile. After a steep climb you soon enter a network of rock chasms and caverns.

You can take the kids on a quick excursion into the woods on the Post Oak Nature Trail which loops around the top of Table Mound from the Memorial Overlook parking area. There are impressive limestone cliffs with lizards scurrying around the rocks.

Directions: See my listing for Elk City Lake for more info.
