"Monastery - by sunset" Batalha Things to Do Tip by leffe3

Batalha Things to Do: 65 reviews and 142 photos

Begun in 1388, the Abbey is a symbol of Portuguese Sovereignty, built as it was as a celebration of the victory by Dom Joao (the illegitimate nephew of King Fernando I of Portugal, who had died heirless) over the Castillian forces at the Battle of Aljubarrota, 3 kms south of Batalha (still with me? LOL).

The Abbey was added to over the next 200 years, incorporating variations on a theme of French Gothic, English Perpendicular and the unique Portuguese Manueline styles.
